‘Still a long way to go,’ says Nirmal Pathak Ki Ghar Wapsi actor Vaibhav Tatwawadi
An engineer-turned-actor, how satisfying is your journey so far?
I would say the journey has been satisfying. I have worked with stalwarts not just in Hindi but also in the Marathi film industry and theatre. I am happy but there is still a long way to go.
What inspired you to become an actor?
In my childhood, I used to watch plays. When I was doing engineering, I started watching films and two actors who left a deep impact were Naseeruddin Shah and Amitabh Bachchan. Also, Pather Panchali by Satyajit Ray had a huge impact on me.
Has your family encouraged you in your career?
My family has been my biggest support. I work for my passion and not for money and my family understands that.
How was the struggle period in Mumbai?
I call it the persuasion period, not struggle. I come from Nagpur, studied in Pune. Both these cities are completely different from Mumbai. Then making contacts in the city was a big challenge as I am an introvert. Here one is expected to present oneself in a certain way and I didn’t have much money.
You have acted in several Marathi as well as Hindi films. Which industry do you like the most when it comes to the working style?
I think it’s talent which matters, not the language. Both the industries have phenomenal talent and the passion for good filmmaking is the same.
Social media is huge nowadays and an actor’s popularity as well as brand power is decided on the number of followers. How do you see this?
Social media is a boon for many people. You can show your talent online and in a short span your video is viral. But one should not be under pressure to be seen all the time.
Tell us about your forthcoming projects.
A Hindi film titled Baat Itni Kaafi Hai will be released this year. Also, another season of Nirmal Pathak Ki Ghar Wapsi is on the cards.
Do you take pressure to look good on screen?
I do yog kriya. I do hit the gym and lift some weights. To me being fit internally is more important. I concentrate a lot on being happy and that comes with meditation.
What’s your ‘me time’?
I sit in my balcony with a cup of tea and read.
