Royal Caribbean Group is looking to adopt Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet for users onboard its ships. The company is one of the largest cruise line operators in the world and has become the first one to put forward such a request. According to PCMagazine, the Royal Caribbean Group has revealed its partnership with SpaceX in a recent FCC filing. The company also mentioned that it has identified “a true next-generation solution” for its cruise liners while working with SpaceX. It also mentioned that the “solution” meets the “rigorous technical and operational requirements” that correspond with the company’s growth plans.
How will it boost internet speeds on cruise ships
According to the report, the currently available Wi-Fi download speeds on ships range from only 3-5Mbps. However, adopting Starlink is expected to upgrade internet speeds on Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships. As per residential consumers, Starlink is capable of delivering download speeds up to 250Mbps.
FCC’s approval is needed for Starlink adoption
SpaceX needs to get mainstream approval from FCC to operate Starlink on moving vehicles, which include planes and naval ships. Meanwhile, the Royal Caribbean Group has requested the US regulator to grant the license as soon as possible.
The company mentioned that satellite internet service on their cruise ships will “set the standard for other cruise operators” and will also enhance “guest experience and business operations while at sea.”
Starlink is also set to arrive on a few airlines, including Hawaiian Airlines. However, rival satellite operators have filed complaints with the FCC over concerns Starlink’s access to moving vehicles will interfere with their satellite networks.
