Starc’s wicket-taking ability is crucial for Australia’s Ashes pace attack: Coach McDonald | Cricket News – Times of India
Despite Starc’s economy rate of 5.34 runs per over – the most expensive performance in his 78-Test career – the left-arm quick managed to claim four crucial wickets at The Oval in London, contributing to Australia’s resounding 209-run victory. Scott Boland also impressed all among the Australian seamers during the match.
With Pat Cummins secure as the captain of the Australian side, a fit-again Josh Hazlewood would join Starc and Boland in the race for the remaining two spots in Australia’s pace attack for the first Ashes Test, set to commence later this week.
Addressing reporters prior to Australia’s move to Edgbaston, the venue for the first Test, Coach McDonald highlighted that Starc was not the sole bowler who conceded runs against India. McDonald acknowledged that while Starc went at a higher rate than usual, the left-arm quick’s presence provided much-needed balance to their pace attack.
“Most of our bowlers went at above what they’d usually go, and we’ve just got to get our heads around that the tempo will be slightly different,” McDonald stated. “Mitch went at a bit more than he generally goes at, but they complement each other really, really well. His wicket-taking ability is second-to-none. We’ve got to weigh all that up when we make decisions.”
Captain Cummins echoed McDonald’s sentiment, expressing confidence in Starc’s ability to play a pivotal role in the upcoming five-test series in England. Cummins recognized Starc’s contribution to the team and the specific challenges the English side presents.
“He did a role for us that we know Starcy can do after 80 test matches,” Cummins said after Australia’s triumph over India. “He has got a huge tour ahead of him and will play a huge role for us. The English side sets up slightly different as well. There are a few more left-handers. The wicket is going to be a bit different. I’m really happy with where Starcy is.”
As Australia prepares to lock horns with England in the Ashes series, the faith placed in Starc’s wicket-taking ability and his potential to impact the game significantly remain key factors in the team’s selection and strategy. With the series set to captivate cricket fans worldwide, all eyes will be on Starc as he looks to make his mark and contribute to Australia’s quest for glory.
