Elon Musk’s SpaceX set to seek permission to launch its internet satellite services in India. The company’s internet arm, Starlink, will also seek statutory approvals from the Indian government for landing rights and market access. In addition, to set up local gateways, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will have to grant permission to the company. A report suggested that SpaceX was actively working on launching its services in ten rural Lok Sabha constituencies in India.

Starlink to apply for GMPCS Permit

Earlier this year, the government ordered Starlink to refund all its pre-orders until they receive the license to operate in the country. The company said that the Department of Telecom directed them to refund pre-orders. In January, Starlink began emailing users in India, offering refunds on their pre-orders. The company informed its customers that the timeline for receiving license to operate in India was currently unknown, and after the issues resolve, they’ll operate Starlink in the country.

A report stated SpaceX would apply for a Global Mobile Personal Communications By Satellite (GMPCS) services license to Indian authorities. Bharti Group-backed OneWeb and Reliance Jio’s satellite arm have already applied for GMPCS services.
