The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 series finally adopts the new naming convention, and the first chip – the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 – is now out, succeeding Snapdragon 778G from last year (2021). The new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is built on Samsung’s 4nm process.
Like its predecessor, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will be seen in the upcoming mid-range Android smartphones. And it’s the first Snapdragon 7 series chipset to come with Qualcomm’s 7th gen AI Engine and support 200MP sensors.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1’s octa-core Kryo CPU comes with a Cortex-A710 Prime core clocked at 2.4GHz, 3x Cortex-A710 cores running at 2.36GHz, and 4x Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 1.8Ghz. The CPU inside the hood is paired with the Adreno GPU having 20% better performance compared to its predecessor inside the Snapdragon 778G. Also, the new GPU can double the frame rates while maintaining the same power consumption as the 778G. The chipset comes with support for up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 gets the Snapdragon X62 5G modem, with download speeds of up to 4.4 Gbps on 5G connectivity on stand-alone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes. And WiFi 6E is there along with Bluetooth 5.3, bringing the support for Snapdragon Sound and aptX support.
The 7 Gen 1 comes with the Qualcomm Spectra triple ISP supporting up to 200MP photo capture and 4K HDR video recording. Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 powered phones will be able to capture 10-bit HEIC photos and HEVC videos.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 powered phones are expected to launch in the next few weeks.
Oppo is likely to be the first company to launch a smartphone powered by the processor. The company’s Oppo Reno 8 Pro+, is said to be powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. The phone will launch on May 23.
