Meta’s chief operating officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg has officially stepped down from her position. The move comes after she spent 14 years at the company. Her role is now going to be taken over by the company’s chief growth officer, Javier Olivan. He will now become the new CEO of Meta from August 1. The information comes courtesy of a filing the company shared with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US.

After vacating her position as the CEO of the company, Sandberg will remain a Meta employee till September 30, and will then move on to join the company’s board of directors.

In the filing Meta explained, “On August 1, 2022, the Board appointed Olivan as the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, effective as of such date. Sandberg will continue as an employee of the Company through September 30, 2022… She will continue to serve as a member of the Board”.

This is not the first time we’re hearing about Sandberg leaving Meta. Earlier in June, Sheryl Sandberg had taken to Facebook to announce that she will be leaving Meta. Sandberg had initially joined Meta, as COO in 2008. Over the past 14 years, Sandberg had been one of the leading figures at the company, driving it through some difficult times, and also seeing it become one of the biggest tech companies in the world.

Last month, company’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg had also thanked Sandberg in a quarterly earnings call. In the meeting he thanked her for all that she has done for Meta over the years. “It’s really hard to overstate how big of an impact that Sheryl has had on so many different parts of what we do and on me personally,” said Zuckerberg.
