Samsung might be planning to use LG batteries for more of its smartphones. According to a report by SamMobile, the South Korean tech giant is planning to pack its entry-level and mid-range smartphones with battery units made by LG. However, this is not the first time for Samsung to use LG batteries inside its phones. Multiple Galaxy S and Note series models already pack batteries from the company that was once one of the biggest rivals of Samsung.
The reason for Samsung’s decision
The report also mentions that Samsung is trying to diversify the procurement sources for some of the phone components, along with reducing costs as much as possible. Samsung is now trying to expand its collaboration with LG regarding batteries which are expected to be included in the Galaxy A and Galaxy M phones, claims the report.
For its low and mid-range phones, Samsung has been using batteries from China’s Amperex Technology Limited and Navitasis (an Indian venture between ATL and Japan’s TDK). However, due to the recent COVID-19 outburst, major cities in China have been closed and that has been a concern for the South Korean tech giant.
These batteries are likely to be produced at LG Energy Solution’s Nanjing plant and transferred to ITM Semiconductor’s local plant in Vietnam. Here, the batteries will be packaged and delivered to a Samsung smartphone plant.
The report also mentions that ITM Semiconductor offered its services at an aggressive price. However, Samsung intentionally selected LG Energy Solution to supply batteries for its Galaxy A and Galaxy M phones.
