Samsung’s foldable – the Galaxy Z Fold – has improved a lot since its inception, but there still is a crease that is noticeable. But that may change with the next foldable – the Galaxy Z Fold5, as Samsung plans to adopt a new hinge mechanism.
Naver, a South Korean publication, reports that Samsung may adopt the “droplet-style” hinge for the Galaxy Z Fold5, which is expected to launch later this year. What does this mean? Well, it means that the Galaxy Z Fold5 would be able to fold completely flat; also that there would not be any gap between the two halves when folded. Meanwhile, when unfolded, the crease would be less visible.
While other foldable, including the likes of Oppo Find N and Moto Razr, have already adopted the “droplet-style,” Samsung has stuck to the “U-shaped” hinge.
For the last four generations of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung has used the “U-shaped” hinge, which closes the display at a sharper angle when folded, and the crease becomes more prominent.
As per the report, Samsung patented the teardrop hinge back in 2016. The speculations are that Samsung did not use it due to concerns over the waterproofing. But, now that has been solved, Samsung may finally switch to the “droplet,” also referred to as “dumbbell” hinge with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5, which would improve the overall structural integrity of the display, making it stronger towards folding and unfolding actions.
The report further notes that the water drop hinge of the Galaxy Z Fold5 would allow the two halves of the display to sit flat. So, when the phone is folded, the gap would become less noticeable than what we see on the current Galaxy Z Fold4 or older models.
The Galaxy Z Fold5 is expected to debut in August this year, along with the Galaxy Z Flip5.
