Samsung is all set to host its Unpacked Event for the next generation of foldables, galaxy watches & more in July 2023. However, before that happens, the updates for the existing devices aren’t slowing down. Today Samsung Electronics has announced a new health feature for the Galaxy Watch that can potentially save lives.

The brand has revealed that the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature will now be found on the Samsung Health Monitor application in 13 markets starting this summer. In tandem with the app’s Blood Pressure and Electrocardiogram monitoring, this irregular heart rate sensor will be able to detect atrial fibrillation and thus prevent heart attacks in the long run.

The IHRN has been approved by the Korean Ministry of Food & Drug Safety last week after being cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Markets where the feature will be available

There are a total of 13 markets where IHRN will be added to the Health Monitor app. These markets are-

  • Argentina
  • Azerbaijan
  • Republic
  • Ecuador
  • Georgia
  • Guatemala
  • Hong Kong
  • Indonesia
  • Panama
  • UAE
  • Korea
  • USA

How does this work?

Along with the existing ECG tracking, IRHN will check for irregular heart rhythms in the background and warn the user of potential AFib activity, if any. With ECG and Blood Pressure monitoring, it will be able to give deeper knowledge about overall cardiovascular health.

Since Its launch in 2020, the Samsung Health Monitor app has been expanded to 74 markets and has allowed over 15 million Galaxy Watch users to keep track of their BP and ECG from their wrists, gaining a better picture of their heart health by constant monitoring.

What does Samsung have to say about IHRN?

“Cardiovascular disease remains one of the main causes of death around the world, and we’re committed to empowering our users to stay informed about their heart health by providing monitoring tools, including blood pressure measurement and irregular heart rhythm notification,” said Hon Pak, VP and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. He further added, “We’re constantly exploring new ways to help Galaxy Watch users obtain deeper insights on their health and wellness effortlessly, day and night.”

IHRN Feature: Rollout Timeline

The IHRN will first be available on the upcoming Galaxy Watch devices later this year, as part of the new One UI 5 Watch and later rollout for previous editions.
