Safdarjung Hospital starts paediatric dialysis for free – ET HealthWorld
New Delhi: Children who need dialysis have got another hospital where they can avail the service for free as the Centre-run Safdarjung Hospital has now started a paediatric hemodialysis service.
The hospital administration claimed that with this, Safdarjung Hospital has become the second central government hospital to provide hemodialysis for children in north India.
Prior to this facility, children with chronic kidney disease and with end stage renal disease were referred to other hospitals. Still, at any point of time, the department sees 2-3 patients who need peritoneal dialysis because of acute kidney failure.
“Kidney failure is not uncommon in children. There are a large number of deaths because of acute kidney failure, many of which are treatable. Chronic kidney failure also comprises of around 10 per cent of all out-patient attendance, which makes a large number, and most of them require hemodialysis while awaiting transplant,” the hospital stated.
Experts said the true burden at Safdarjung Hospital can only be seen 5-6 months later, assuming that it will face very high patient load from Delhi and surrounding states.
