Ruturaj Gaikwad will shine for India: Michael Hussey | Cricket News – Times of India

0

CHENNAI: Michael Hussey got his chances for Australia closer to his 30s and then went on to become one of the stalwarts. That’s what makes the Chennai Super Kings batting coach believe that it is a matter of time before Ruturaj Gaikwad blossoms into a successful international player.
“Ruturaj has been way better than I was (at that age). There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he can be very successful at the international level,” Hussey said during an interaction.

Ruturaj, despite his success for CSK, hasn’t been able to come up with the goods for India in the nine T20Is and one ODI that he has played so far. But Hussey insists that some players need a slightly longer run to do well.
“We should remember that it is an extremely difficult team to get into. And then he has got only a few chances and that can sometimes be tough. He may just take a little longer than some other player, but that is part of the journey. He has the skill and the mental understanding to succeed,” Hussey, also called ‘Mr Cricket’ because of his prolific run-scoring, added.

Ruturaj, in fact, wasn’t an instant success for CSK either when he made his debut in 2020. He had a couple of failures but the team persisted with him and by the end of the season, he had shaped into a quality opener for the franchise.
“It has been amazing to watch him develop. He is such a self-aware player and wants to improve all the time. He plays the classical cricket shots all round the park and now he has added power to his game. What makes Ruturaj special is his ability to hit good balls for boundaries,” Hussey added.

While Ruturaj’s success with the bat has been one of the talking points of the IPL so far, it has been a little surprising to see India’s premier allrounder Ravindra Jadeja coming down the order for CSK. Against Lucknow Super Giants, he came in to bat as late as the 17th over after the likes of Shivam Dubey and Ambati Rayudu.
But Hussey said that it isn’t about the fact that CSK want to see him as the new finisher.
“In this team, it is about adaptability and flexibility. All of those middle-order players need to be flexible depending on the opposition and nature of the pitch.”
