Rupert Murdoch’s former right-hand man in Australia dies
Rupert Murdoch’s former right-hand man in Australia Ken Cowley has died at the age of 87.
The news was reported by 2GB presenter Chris Smith on Ben Fordham’s show this morning. Smith is a close friend of the Cowley family.
Cowley was one of Rupert Murdoch’s most trusted lieutenants. He was chairman and chief executive of News Limited and was on the company’s board for more than 30 years, making him the most powerful media executive in the country.
“He was not just a magnificent business mind but an amazing, loving dad and husband for my 64 years,” Matt Cowley said in a statement to 2GB.
“Started the Australian newspaper, assisted R.M. Williams to build and open the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre as well as chairman of Ansett and the chairman and CEO of News Corporation. Most of all he was my and my sister’s dad and mum, Maureen’s, husband. He will be missed by many but remembered fondly.”
Cowley was a significant player in the Super League wars – the Australian Rugby League and News Corp’s battle for control of the code in the 1990s.
It is not known if his relationship with Murdoch recovered after an interview with the Australian Financial Review in 2014.
Cowley, who had retired from News Corp by then, described Lachlan Murdoch – News Corp’s co-chairman at the time, as a “not a great businessman”.
