HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pat Cummins is likely to succeed Tim Paine as Australia’s next Test captain
  • Paine quit from the post following his involvement in a ‘sexting’ scandal 4 years ago
  • Cricket Australia has accelerated its process of selecting the next Test captain ahead of the Ashes starting Dec. 8

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke feels it is the right time for fast bowler Pat Cummins to take over the skipper’s job in the Test team following Tim Paine’s sensational resignation from the post over a ‘sexting’ scandal last week.

Pat Cummins is the frontrunner to captain Australia in the upcoming home Ashes series against England, after growing calls from former players with Clarke being the latest to join the list that includes the likes of Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist and even current England seamer James Anderson.

Clarke feels Cummins will be the right man for the job and will have plenty of senior players to guide him in his new role if he is given the responsibility in Tests by Cricket Australia.

Vice captain Cummins, 28, has taken 164 wickets in 32 test for Australia since making his debut in 2011.

“If we were three or five years on it might be different. But with so much seniority in the team, I think it is the right time for him. Because they can help him.

“Steve Smith, David Warner, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood. These guys have played a truckload of Test cricket. They can be there to help him, with or without the C or VC next to his name,” Clarke said on the Big Sports Breakfast show on Sky Sports Radio.

Like other major cricket nations, Australia has been reluctant to appoint bowlers as captains, with most coming from the batting ranks. Cummins would be only the second specialist fast bowler in the role since Ray Lindwall led in one Test against India in the mid-1950s, if he is appointed captain before the Ashes series starting December 8.

“You have to allow him time to get into this job. Because he hasn’t had 10 years of captain first-grade or state cricket. But sometimes you can see certain things in people, and I think he’s got it.

“He reads the game. He’s a cricket captain. Looking at on the field tactics. The way he talks to his players. The way he sets the field when he bowls,” Clarke, who has been a vocal supporter of Cummins being made skipper since 2018, added.
