Records galore as Yashasvi Jaiswal fires maiden Test ton in West Indies | Cricket News – Times of India
The Jaiswal ton put him in a rare list of Indian openers, who scored a hundred on in their debut Test matches.
The 21-year-old has now joined Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw, who previously scored a century in their maiden Tests as openers.
While Dhawan fired 187 against Australia in his first Test Mohali in 2013, Shaw scored 134 versus West Indies in Rajkot in 2018.
Yashasvi also became the third Indian batsman to score a hundred on debut against West Indies. Rohit Sharma (177 – Kolkata, 2013) and Shaw are the other two batsmen to achieve the feat.
Yashasvi is now the seventh Indian batsman to register a Test century on debut in an away match, a first in 13 years. The last Indian to achieve the landmark outside of India was Suresh Raina, who scored a 120 against Sri Lanka in 2010.
The left-hander also became the 17th Indian Test debutant to score a hundred. The most recent player to accomplish this feat was Shreyas Iyer, who achieved it in 2021 against New Zealand in Kanpur.
The opener along with his partner and skipper Rohit Sharma also recorded the highest opening partnership for India in Tests in West Indies, adding 229 runs for the first wicket. The duo surpassed Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer’s 17-year-old record of a 159-run stand in Gros Islet.
Yashasvi’s incredible journey has been nothing short of a fairytale. At the age of 11, Yashasvi left his home in Suriya village, Uttar Pradesh, and embarked on a journey to Mumbai, where he faced numerous challenges. In the early stages of his career, he lived in tents and had to resort to selling pani puris to sustain himself.
His days were spent at Azad Maidan, where he sought opportunities to hone his skills. Yashasvi’s quintessential rags-to-riches narrative has served as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes.
