Raspberry Pi 5 Arrives at $60, Offers A Better CPU, And Supports PCle 2.0 Interface – Smartprix
On Friday, the Raspberry Foundation announced the Raspberry Pi 5, the next generation of the portable computer. It takes after Raspberry Pi 4, which came out in 2019. The new processor is about two to three times more powerful than its predecessor and offers significant upgrades.
Raspberry Pi 5 Specifications
The Raspberry Pi 5 features a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortext-A76 CPU based on Broadcom’s 16-nanometer fabrication technology. It has 512KB per-core L2 caches, and a 2MN shared L3 cache. The cores are accompanied with 4GB and 8GB of RAM. There’s a VideoCore VII GPU that supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, which supports dual 4K 60 fps HDMI display output. Moreover, the new processor has a higher clock speed, consumes less power, and is better at handling graphics.
Connectivity options on the Raspberry Pi 5 include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, Bluetooth Low Energy, and a high-speed microSD card with SDR104 mode support. Users also get two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and two four-lane MIPI camera/display receivers. It also features a PCle 2.0 interface for fast peripherals. Raspberry Pi 5 also supports 5V/5A DC power via a USB-C port.
Raspberry Pi 5 Price
Compared to the Raspberry Pi 4, the Raspberry Pi 5 costs $60 for the model with 4GB of RAM. The model with 8GB of RAM costs $80. This year, buyers can choose different accessories, including a $5 Active Cooler, a $10 updated case, and new MIPI connectors that cost $1, $2, and $3 for 200mm, 300mm, and 500mm variants, respectively. A new Panasonic lithium manganese rechargeable coin cell costs $5. While the processor is available to pre-order starting September 29, 2023, the orders will start shipping from October 2023.
