Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to feature higher clock speeds with new Cortex-X4 super core configuration – Smartprix

Qualcomm has decided to stick to TSMC’s 4nm process for the rest of the year when launching the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and it seems the company will leverage the new N4P node for its better efficiency. This improvement should allow Qualcomm to utilize more performance cores than in its previous SoCs. According to recent rumors, the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will come equipped with a higher frequency Cortex-X4 super core than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s Cortex-X3, possibly running at 3.70GHz, although there is no confirmation on this as of yet.

Weibo tipster @Digital Chat suggests that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will feature a CPU cluster of ‘1 + 5 + 2,’ with one Cortex-X4 core and two Hunter ‘titanium’ cores, along with three Hunter ‘gold’ cores. There was previously speculation that Qualcomm was testing a version with a ‘2 + 4 + 2’ configuration, but it appears that the company was not pleased with the performance, as it features two Cortex-X4 cores instead of one. Although earlier rumors suggested that the Cortex-X4 could operate at 3.40GHz, the latest update suggests that it could run at a higher frequency of 3.70GHz, marking a 15% improvement over the Cortex-X3’s 3.20GHz speed.

It is uncertain if the upgraded Cortex-X4 will only be featured in the Galaxy S24 or if Qualcomm will make this a standard configuration for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Despite Apple reportedly producing its A17 Bionic on the 3nm process, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s ability to run at higher clock speeds, merely by upgrading to the 4nm node, is an impressive feat. It is worth noting that Qualcomm may skip the 3nm process and jump directly to the N3E process, like MediaTek.
