PV Sindhu to pick and choose tournaments in 2022 | Badminton News – Times of India

KOCHI: It’s been a hectic two months to cap off 2021 for two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu. The 26-year-old has clocked thousands of miles in recent months as she hopped from Odense to Paris in October and then to Bali in November before ending the run at Huelva in Spain earlier this month.
But the new year guarantees to be an even busier one for Sindhu as she begins it with the India Open from January 11 in New Delhi. Besides the regular tournaments, the year will also see two big events — the Commonwealth Games starting July and the Asian Games in September making it a packed badminton calendar.
“Last couple of months were hectic, but it was also important when it came to ranking and seeding. So, I had my physical trainer with me all the time so that I could stay fit between matches,” said the world No. 7, who was in the city to attend a promotional event.
“We have continuous tournaments coming in 2022 also. But to keep up your shape, you need to pick and choose the ones to play in. I will do that after discussing with my coach and the team,” said Sindhu, who won bronze at Tokyo 2020 and silver at World Tour Finals recently.
The badminton star is also looking forward to playing in the 2022 Asian Games. “It has always been a tough one, because all the top Asian players, who have been doing well recently, will be there. We have to be at our best from the first round and there won’t be any easy games,” she said.
A blip in Sindhu’s year was her early exit from the BWF World Championship in the quarterfinals at the hands of Tai Tzu Ying — her fifth straight defeat to the current world No. 1. But Sindhu feels it is not an impossible task to get the better of Tai Tzu.
“You need to strategise according to each player. Tai Tzu is a skilful player, while someone like An Se-young or Akane Yamaguchi is different. The standards of the top 10 players are almost the same and a lot depends on who performs better on the day,” Sindhu said.
