Grocery retailer Pick n Pay has just ventured into homeware with a new online store, offering products in the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and outdoor categories, among others.

Pick n Pay Home will offer a range of products for every room in the home and has future plans of expanding into other categories.

The store will offer small and large appliances, televisions, tech, home- and kitchenware, baby, and outdoor and braai essentials. It will also carry premium exclusive brands such as Zwilling, Staub and Siemens, the retailer said in a statement on Tuesday.

Vincent Viviers, Pick n Pay’s retail executive for omnichannel said online shopping for products in the homeware segment has accelerated in recent years.

“Our new service aims to take advantage of this trend and will offer an easy, convenient shopping experience,” Viviers  said.

“We have created an inspirational online shop that let’s customers shop for their homes, from the comfort of their homes. Our nationwide delivery and Smart Shopper benefits mean that Pick n Pay Home is both practical and affordable,” he said.

Pick n Pay’s entry into the homeware market will see it compete with the likes of Mr Price which retails homeware goods and furniture under its Mr Price Home, Sheet Street and Yuppiechef banners.

That division saw retail sales and other income grow by 15.6% to R6.5 billion during the year to 2 April 2022.

Pepkor’s Pep Home has also been making significant inroads in the market with the stand-alone format achieving 27.2% sales growth for its interim results for the six months ended 31 March 2022.

Woolworths, which has had a home division for a long time, has been cautiously strengthening its offering and recently added small furniture.

Pick n Pay said its homeware website was designed to help customers quickly search and compare prices.

“We have used artificial intelligence to make sure our customers get fast, personalised results for precisely what they are looking for,” Viviers said.

“We are very excited about Pick n Pay Home, our latest online offering. We have built an excellent nationwide scheduled grocery business and can now deliver the same excellence for our customers’ homeware needs,” he said.
