PGI awaits rotational headship but no report from panel yet – ET HealthWorld
Chandigarh : It has been more than seven months now since the committee to decide on the issue of rotational headship was formed but the report has still not been submitted to the union ministry of health and family welfare.
Three weeks back, staff at PGI and AIIMS decided to go on a protest as the rotational headship proposal with the Niti Aayog had not reached the union ministry of health.
There was speculation in AIIMS and PGI that the proposal had been forwarded and signed by the union minister for a four-year term for rotational headship. Officially denying this, Niti Aayog member Dr Vinod Paul said, “The proposal is in process.”
PGI faculty recently met their counterparts in AIIMS to decide on a course of action. “We had been convinced that the rotational headship would surely happen this time and we need to be patient. Even now, if the proposal has not been submitted, the thing will not move forward as it is being dilly-dallied,” said a faculty association member at PGI.
JIPMER Puducherry, an institute of national importance, has been following rotational headship since 2013. It follows three years of rotation of the professors and additional professors in each department.
The faculty feel that rotational headship is beneficial both for the faculty and patient care as it will offer a fair chance to faculty to gain administrative experience and apply for the post of director of any institute in future.
After the directions of the union minister of health to look into the feasibility of rotational headship in PGI/AIIMS, a committee was constituted in November last year under the chairmanship of Dr V K Paul, Niti Aayog.
The committee comprised Dr K K Talwar, former PGI director, Dr Jagat Ram, former PGI director, Dr MC Misra, former director AIIMS, Dr Abhay Karandikar, director of IIT Kanpur and Dr V M Katoch, former director general of ICMR.
