PG students call AIIMS surgeon incompetent; baseless claim, says director in Nagpur

Nagpur: Days after undergraduate students posted their grievances on social media, yet another anonymous complaint against a senior faculty member of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Nagpur has surfaced.

This time, postgraduate students have levelled serious allegations against one of the surgeons whom they allegedly found “incompetent, arrogant, irresponsible and irrational”.

AIIMS director Dr Vibha Dutta and the surgeon refused to comment saying “it is a baseless and anonymous complaint”.

The PG students have detailed several incidents where the surgeon has either “risked the lives of patients during operations, delayed surgeries or denied post-operative care for unexplained reasons”. “He is incapable at all levels. He is an incompetent surgeon. He is not able to do any major surgery alone like thyroidectomy, laparotomy and parotidectomy. He is not aware of where to take incision in any particular surgery. Once there was major intra operative bleeding and because of this he fainted and rest of the case was managed by juniors,” stated the complaint.

Sources said the complaint was dropped in the director’s office more than a month ago. Though the letter gives minute details of several alleged lapses by the surgeon, the administration surprisingly never set up any committee to cross-check them.

The letter pointed out that some senior residents (SRs) and junior residents (JRs) have quit within months of joining because of their alleged harassment at the hands of the surgeon. “Who would leave his or her PG seat at an institute like AIIMS-Nagpur? But it was becoming unbearable. We were not allowed to even leave campus for a thing like a haircut without his permission. He didn’t allow us to do small procedures without his permission, thus delaying treatment to patients,” said a PG student who recently moved to another institute.

“One patient was operated on by him for multiple peritoneal and hepatic hydatid cyst. Post-operation, the patient developed SSI (surgical site infection) and pus was oozing from the sutured area. He didn’t allow the patient a USG or CT and even screamed at the faculty who suggested it. The patient went home without knowing post-operative findings and we couldn’t give proper advice,” read the complaint.

The complaint further stated that the surgeon yells at the students in a very cruel and disgusting way in front of all patients, relatives, nursing officers, and housekeeping staff to “humiliate” them. “He threatens everyone that he will see them, or remove them from institution. Students are not learning anything,” the PG student said.
