Payment issue resolved, 26 retd docs get over ₹1.74 crore – ET HealthWorld

Indore: Health department and medical college authority have resolved payment issues of over Rs 1.74 crore to 26 retired doctors ensuring payment of the recovery amount following a Supreme Court order.

The officials fearing contempt of the Apex Court worked on two holidays, Saturday and Sunday, across the state including, Indore to make payments to doctors to settle the recovered amount. Of those 26, 19 were retired doctors from the health department and rest were from the medical education department, who served in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Indore.

CMHO Dr BS Saitya said, “The bills for payment of around Rs 1.74 crore to 19 doctors were sent to the treasury in two days. The payments would be made by today in accordance with the direction of the Supreme Court.”

The doctors get payment between Rs 5 lakh and 20 lakh. MGM Medical College dean Dr Sanjay Dixit said, “There were seven doctors in MGM Medical College and associated hospitals. Of them, four are at MY Hospital, two are Government Cancer Hospital and one is MGMMC. The payments were made to them starting from Saturday itself.”

In 2008, a four tier pay scale was given to doctors. After this, citing some technical reasons, the order was withdrawn and the government issued a recovery order, in which recovery was made with 12 per cent interest from the doctors.

The doctors approached MP high court, getting decision in their favour. Later, the state government appealed the MPHC decision before the division bench and the doctors moved before the Supreme Court.
