Partha Chatterjee, his aide Arpita Mukherjee kept in separate cells amid security concerns

Former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee are held under judicial custody in different jails with high security, even as the Enforcement Directorate claimed to have seized more documents related to a money-laundering probe against them.

The agency has traced a link between a company, Ananta Texfab Pvt Ltd which has Mukherjee’s Belghoria apartment as its registered address, and the former minister’s family members, according to the observations made by a special court that rejected their bail applications on Friday. The agency had seized about Rs 27.90 crore from the same apartment last month.

More than 50 bank accounts are under the agency’s scanner, and it is seeking account statements which will be sent for forensic audit, ED sources said.

Mukherjee, on a 14-day judicial custody, has been kept in a separate cell in the women’s correctional home in Kolkata’s Alipur and Chatterjee in a cell in the high-profile section of the Presidency Correctional Home, also in the same locality.

She is kept separately in a cell on the special court’s direction, following apprehensions raised by ED’s lead advocate and Mukherjee’s lawyer about her safety.

Chatterjee, who was also sent to judicial custody for 14 days on Friday, is now staying in the “safest” cell in the high profile section of the Presidency Correctional Home.

Other inmates in the jail include American Centre attack mastermind Aftab Ansari, Sarada chit fund owner Sudipta Sen and Trinamool leader and former Maoist Chhatradhar Mahato.

According to jail sources, Chatterjee repented choosing politics over corporate career. After entering the Presidency Correctional Home on Friday evening, the former minister Chatterjee said “this day wouldn’t have come if he didn’t leave his corporate job and entered into the politics”, said one of them.

He is keeping silent in his cell and avoiding talking to others in the cell, the sources said.

Sarada chief Sudipta Sen’s close aide, Debjani Mukhopadhyay, was earlier lodged in the cell where Mukherjee is currently housed.
