Club Med Cherating, the all-inclusive resort in Pahang, doubled domestic business last year, stated Olivier Monceau at a brand immersion session today.

Olivier was appointed as the General Malaysia of Club Med Malaysia and Singapore in October 2022.

“Malaysia market rebound has been swift and powerful, enabling us to not only double domestic business in 2022 in Malaysia, but to surpass occupancy rates [of] pre-pandemic’s,” he said. Their occupancy rate sat at 75%.

Quoting a survey conducted with Club Med Cherating guests, Olivier stated that 80% of respondents selected “hassle-free holiday planning” and “cuisine and beverage” as the top two features of their all-inclusive stays at Club Med Cherating.

He also said that the 93% of respondents said they would be willing to return to the resort.

Club Med Cherating was first opened in 1980, making it Club Med’s first-ever location in Asia.

Four-trident resort to open in Sabah next year

During the brand immersion session, Olivier stated that Club Med will be expanding its footprint in Malaysia with a new project in Kota Kinabalu.

The Borneo resort is set to open by the end of 2024, though earlier reports said that it would be opening late 2023 or early 2024, or even as soon as 2022.

“Kota Kinabalu is a four-trident resort, with a five-trident exclusive collection space,” Olivier elaborated, with tridents being Club Med’s way of saying “stars”.

The resort will occupy 41 acres of land “between woods and waves”, and targets to be a BREEAM sustainability certification of “very good”.

BREEAM, first published by the Building Research Establishment in 1990, is the world’s longest established method of assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings.

Olivier shared that the resort’s design is inspired by “numerous traditional Bornean ethnic cultures” while integrating the structure with the surrounding red forest.

The resort aims to offer a plethora of activities and encourage guests to preserve the location’s natural beauty.

Other than the Kota Kinabalu resort, Club Med is also set to open many more locations globally in the next two years. Its aim in 2022 was to open 17 new resorts and complete 13 new renovations by 2024.
