Openai: OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, sued for ‘stealing’ people’s data – Times of India

0

Chances are that many people wouldn’t have heard of OpenAI even 12 months back. But in November, ChatGPT arrived and OpenAI was the talk of the town. So much so that ChatGPT has become quite synonymous with the most generative AI-related tech. OpenAI has raked in billions and that has a flip side as well. A proposed class action lawsuit has been filed against OpenAI in a California federal court.

Why is OpenAI being sued?

The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI stole and misused a large number of people’s data from the internet. The accusation is that the data was used to train its AI tools. According to a report by CNN, the lawsuit also claims that the company ‘seized’ “essentially every piece of data exchanged on the internet it could take.” And that too without any notice, consent, or a “just” compensation, the lawsuit claimed.
In a statement to CNN, Timothy Giordano said, “By collecting previously obscure personal data of millions and misappropriating it to develop a volatile, untested technology, OpenAI put everyone in a zone of risk that is incalculable – but unacceptable by any measure of responsible data protection and use.” Giordano is a partner at Clarkson, law firm which is behind the suit.
The lawsuit essentially accuses OpenAI for using “stolen private information, including personally identifiable information, from hundreds of millions of internet users, including children of all ages, without their informed consent or knowledge.”
Interestingly, Microsoft signed a billion-dollar deal with OpenAI, and has also been named as a defendant. So far, neither Microsoft nor OpenAI has made any comment on the lawsuit filed against them.
Do keep in mind that the lawsuit has been filed but it’s not clear whether the court agrees to go ahead with the legal proceedings or not.
