OnePlus 10R vs Vivo X80: How does the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Max fare against the 9000? | 91mobiles.com

It’s been a few weeks since Vivo announced its latest flagship series in the form of the Vivo X80 lineup in the Indian market. I have reviewed the regular X80 (review) which comes with the all-new MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC and concluded that it is one of the, if not the, fastest phones in the Indian market. Apart from that, MediaTek also previously revealed another new addition to the Dimensity lineup in the form of the 8100 which can be seen on the OnePlus 10R (review) and the Realme GT Neo 3.

OnePlus 10R

In an earlier comparison, the X80’s Dimensity 9000 beat the OnePlus 10 Pro’s 8 Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in several performance departments. While it is quite apparent to me that the Dimensity 8100 Max SoC is going to lose to the 9000, I still want to find out in quantitative terms how well the latter performs over the former. Benchmark numbers are our best bet to measure performance levels on a smartphone, so let’s compare the scores achieved on the two devices.

Geekbench 5

OnePlus 10R(L) vs Vivo X80 (R)

My go-to synthetic benchmarking tool is definitely Geekbench 5, which calculates single-core and multi-core results. The OnePlus 10R with the Dimensity 8100 Max gets scores of 890 and 3,489 respectively while the Dimensity 9000-powered Vivo X80 gets 1,139 and 3,808. In terms of percentage gains, the X80 is ahead on multi-core results by about 10 percent while on single-core usage the difference is about 22 percent. It stands to reason that the latter has a significant jump for the X80 as it is using the Cortex X2 super core which is clocked higher at 3.05GHz as compared to the 10R’s Cortex A78.

Antutu V9.3.9

On Antutu, a benchmark that takes into account a whole lot more than just the CPU capabilities to churn out an overall score, the difference between the Dimensity 9000 and Dimensity 8100 Max is more significant. The OnePlus 10R finishes the test with a score of 708,905 while the Vivo X80 outputs 994,933. The difference is nearly 30 percent between the two devices. In terms of temperature gained the OnePlus 10R is almost 1.4 degrees lower than the X80 while also losing two percent less battery. Even so, in the overall scheme of things these figures are not as significant as the difference in scores between the two phones.

CPU Throttle

It is also important to find out how much of the CPU is being throttled down under sustained load to prevent overheating. As of late, the higher-end Qualcomm chipsets have been more prone to cutting down peak performance than their MediaTek counterparts. That being said the Vivo X80 did see some throttling during my previous comparison but it seems that a software update has fixed that. While running a 30-minute test with 20 threads, the X80 throttles down to about 78 percent of its peak performance which is a significant improvement from 55 percent the last time around. For the OnePlus 10R, on the same test, the phone’s peak performance is 87 percent, which gives it a slight edge over the Dimensity 9000-powered Vivo X80.

3DMark Extreme Wild Life Stress test

3Dmark’s synthetic benchmark is a more detailed way of knowing how well the CPU and GPU perform under a load equal to running a highly intensive gaming title. Based on the results, the benchmark generates a stability and a loop score which helps in understanding the device’s processing prowess. For the OnePlus 10R, the best loop score was 1,356 while for the Vivo X80 the result was 2,437. In terms of percentage, the X80’s loop score is nearly double that of the OnePlus 10R. The stability of the chipset can be seen by how low is the lowest loop score from the highest.

OnePlus 10R(L) vs Vivo X80 (R)

In the case of the OnePlus 10R, the stability is 85.6 percent while the X80’s stability is 97.5 percent. What this basically means is that over a period of sustained GPU usage, the Vivo X80 can maintain a higher frame rate for longer times than the OnePlus 10R. The graphical representation also conforms to this as you can see the wayward pattern on the OnePlus 10R’s stress test versus the X80’s almost linear graph.

BGMI gaming

A truer test of a chipset’s graphical capabilities is aptly demonstrated by the way it can handle Battlegrounds Mobile India, a popular multiplayer battle royal title that can bring down many smartphones to their knees. The OnePlus 10R can be set only at Ultra (45fps) frame rate while graphics are set at the highest on HDR. For a higher fps count the graphics have to be reduced to Smooth which opens up the Extreme (60fps) option. On the Vivo X80, you can push for Extreme graphics even on HDR settings. Also if you scale down to Smooth graphics, an option for 90fps is made available, making it currently the only phone capable of accessing this feature.

OnePlus 10R(T) vs Vivo X80 (B)

I set both devices at Smooth graphics and Extreme frame rate, as this is the setting most compatible on all smartphones, and ran the game for 30 minutes. It seems that from the last time around, Vivo has indeed managed to keep the device cooler as the X80 has a 9-degree gain in temperature which is a 5-degree decrease from the last time I had compared it. On the OnePlus 10R, the temperature gain was in the range of 11-12 degrees. Both devices have the same battery capacity however, the OnePlus 10R saw a drop of 6 percent as compared to 9 percent on the Vivo X80.

Verdict

The OnePlus 10R is priced at starting Rs 38,999 while the Vivo X80 is more in the range of premium flagships starting at Rs 54,999. There are several deciding factors between the two devices that can correlate to the price gap. While it does look like that the Vivo X80 does not warrant an extra Rs 15,000 over the OnePlus 10R solely on the basis of performance, the former does offer several camera features that could make the higher asking price justifiable. In any case, what’s clear is that MediaTek seems to have two very solid SoC options in the Dimensity 8100 and 9000, and phones powered by these should not leave users wanting for more in the performance department.
