Noida, Ghaziabad hospitals to scale down Covid beds, staff as cases fallNoida: The number of beds reserved for the treatment of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) patients in Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad may come down soon as the bed occupancy in the twin districts has dropped drastically Currently, 10 and eight Covid-19 patients are undergoing treatment in GB Nagar and Ghaziabad, respectively.

In GB Nagar, Sharda Hospital, the only level-3 (L3) Covid hospital in the district, had reserved a total of 810 beds for Covid patients since April 2020. The hospital administration said only one Covid patient was currently admitted at the facility and hence they were planning to gradually shift focus on the treatment of other patients. But being an L3 hospital, the hospital will continue to have 200 beds for Covid treatment.

In other hospitals too, medical staff are being redeployed on other duties. Dr Vishwa Bandhu Joshi of Kailash Hospital in Sector 27 told TOI that though the Covid ward in the hospital was intact, the facility has re-deployed its medical staff to take care of other non-Covid patients. “The isolation ward is catering to patients coming with severe complaints of cough and cold,” he said.

The Sector 39 Noida Covid Hospital, however, will continue to function under the Epidemic Diseases Act till March 31 as a dedicated Covid facility. “We will continue our operations as a dedicated Covid hospital till there is further notification from the government. The facility has to be on alert mode to take care of any eventuality till we receive alternative instructions,” Dr Tritya Saxena, the hospital’s medical superintendent, said.

In Ghaziabad, while there is no immediate scaling down of beds of Covid-related facilities, chief medical officer Dr Bhavtosh Shankhdhar said, “As of now, the hospitals notified for treatment of Covid patients in the district are still operational. But as soon as the hospitals get free following the discharge of Covid patients, the process of de-notification will be initiated.”

In Ghaziabad, ESIC Hospital (L-1), Santosh Hospital (L-2 and L-3), Rama Medical College (L2), District Combined Hospital and four community health centres (CHCs) had been identified as Covid facilities. In GB Nagar, GIMS (L2), Sharda Hospital (L3), Noida Covid Hospital (L2), Child PGI (L2), ESIC Hospital and four CHCs had been earmarked.
