No extension to AIIMS Dr Vibha Dutta, Rao to take charge

Nagpur: Maj Gen (retd) Dr Vibha Dutta’s tenure as the first director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will end on Monday after she attains 65 years of age. The government has handed over the charge to AIIMS Madurai executive director Dr MH Rao for a period of six months or till regular appointment.

The AIIMS Nagpur top post has also now been downgraded to the level of executive director and at a lower pay scale. Dr Dutta took over the charge of AIIMS Nagpur in November 2018 when it was still functioning from a makeshift campus at the GMCH. The maiden batch of 50 first-year MBBS students graduated in December last year.

Officials said Dr Dutta was hopeful of an extension as she was yet to complete five years at the helm though as per the advertisement then the tenure also included age limit of 65 years.

“It was a great tenure, full of challenges and achievements. I got cooperation from all stakeholders without which it would be impossible to establish the institution like AIIMS in such a short period,” Dr Dutta told TOI.

Her experience as a military officer did come handy in dealing with management issues faced by public medical colleges during COVID times and in general. However, imposition of military rules didn’t go down well with civilian faculty members and medical students, who often felt humiliated and suppressed.

During her four and half years, students faced stringent action such as suspension for weeks to months for reasons like turning up late for mess or staying awake at night in hostel. Faculty members were never consulted by her, unlike other medical colleges where weekly college council meetings are a norm. In December, students and faculty members opened up about their sufferings by posting them on social media.

“Opinion of all department is necessary in a civilian hospital. In military, the boss never takes opinion of others, it is fine there. Here, you need to show collective leadership. She lacked experience of a civilian setting and the staff and students had little idea about military pattern. This was a mismatch,” said a faculty member.
