West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “The post-poll violence in Bengal is unprecedented. Such violence has not been witnessed since independence.”

“Media, pillar of democracy, need to project enormity of post poll violence/human right violations and Mamata Banerjee’s inaction will be monumental blunder & contribute to ever silencing of sufferers,” Jagdeep Dhankhar took to twitter.

NHRC Committee, said in its statement, that the members interact with complainants and victims of post-poll violence today and will do it tomorrow as well in Kolkata’s Salt Lake. After visiting Coochbehar, South and North 24 Parganas, NHRC Committee members reached Kolkata. The committee said people who are unable to visit them physically can email & telephone.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on June 18 to constitute a committee to examine complaints of post-poll violence in the state by meeting people who had alleged that they were tortured and forced to flee.

A five-judge bench, headed by acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal, observed that the state government had been denying post-poll violence from the very beginning. However, petitions filed by a section of the affected parties and a report submitted by the state legal services secretary had given a different account, it said.
