New sleep lab ready at GIMS, to start ops in October – ET HealthWorld

Noida: A new sleep lab was inaugurated at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) on Friday and will be functional soon. The lab has been established under the Department of pulmonary medicine and will address problems like snoring, disturbed sleep, sleepwalking, talking while sleeping, and hypertension.

“The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) plans to start the sleep lab under the department of pulmonary medicine soon. It will start from early October and will remain open on Fridays,” GIMS officials said.

The chief guest of the ceremony was Dr Suryakant, head of respiratory department at KGMU, Lucknow.

According to doctors, obesity is affecting many people, especially in urban areas, and is also a major reason behind sleep apnoea — a sleep disorder causing irregular breathing. In people with obesity, fat deposits in the upper respiratory tract and narrows the airway causing reduced muscle activity in this region. This leads to low oxygen levels in the body and episodes where breathing repeatedly starts and stops during sleep.

Dr Rashmi Upadhayay, head of pulmonary medicine at GIMS, said, “People consider snoring as a common phenomenon, but it is a very serious issue which starts with obesity and leads to several other problems. At the sleep lab, patients who face issues like snoring, sleep apnoea and disturbed sleep, as well as those who suddenly wake up at night, sleepwalk or sleep talk will be evaluated. We will ask patients to fill a detailed questionnaire and then conduct some tests like blood pressure, blood sugar levels and thyroid.”

The doctors added that during the evaluation, a 90-minutes sleep cycle will be observed. “There are four stages in each sleep cycle and the machines will help us understand exactly where the sleep pattern is getting disturbed and a solution will be given to the patient,” Dr Upadhyay added.

Doctors said that sleep is also disturbed because of anatomical causes, which can be corrected through surgical procedures in some patients.
