Netball: Mystics borrow rival player to get on court
The Stars have lent the Mystics one of their wider squad members to help get the defending champions on court for the start of the ANZ premiership this weekend.
The Stars’ fixture against the Pulse on Monday was postponed due to Covid affecting several members of the Pulse.
Mystics coach Helene Wilson rung Stars coach Kiri Wills to ask if she could borrow one of her players for their game against the Magic on Sunday.
Kiri Wills told RNZ last week that the high performance community would have to work together to get through the Omicron outbreak.
Stars’ training partner Greer Sinclair, who has got some ANZ Premiership experience, will be added to the Mystics.
“We have three players in isolation at the moment across the shooting, midcourt and defence areas and Greer can cover both the midcourt and the defence so she’s going to be very handy for our team,” Wilson said.
Wilson wouldn’t say which players had been affected but the team will be announced on Saturday.
Under new protocols if four or more players in a team are affected by Covid, franchises can apply to get the game postponed.
“The issue at the moment is across the club we’ve had 15 cases of Covid in the past fortnight so to bring up younger players into the Mystics when they are recovering from Covid that’s what the challenge is.
“And I think to get netball on the court so that we can play some games we’re going to have to work together across the country.”
Wilson said it provided opportunities for young players across the country to be exposed to ANZ netball
“I think if any young player can be given the opportunity to learn and be exposed to the high performance environment I would support any player in our club programme to do that.”
Meanwhile, Sunday’s Round 2 Netball League match between Waikato Bay of Plenty and the Northern Marvels has been cancelled under the league’s Covid-19 Match Cancellation Policy.
The game will be declared a draw, with competition points shared.
Sunday’s other match between Mainland and South at Christchurch Arena remains scheduled to be played from 1.35pm.
