How has been the experience of working in TV shows?

It’s a joyful ride. In the beginning, I went only for one episode of Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai in which I played the role of Anita’s uncle. But within a fortnight they called me back. Post that, I also got cast in Happu Ki Ultan Paltan.

Tell us about your role.

I play the role of Police Commissioner Resham Pal Singh in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai. In our films, Police Commissioners are like Vinod Khanna, Jackie Shroff – tall and well built. So, I was a bit shocked when they offered me this role. They made me wear a big wig and a big moustache. But because of my small face, it was changed to small moustache, and finally, the look was approved.

How has been the experience of shooting amid the pandemic?

Our producers (Sanjay and Binaiferr Kohli) have taken good care of us. When Covid happened, Binaiferr ma’am got our health insurance done. The atmosphere on the sets is also very warm and welcoming. Everyone is friendly and supportive.

We all know your liking for the legendary actor Dev Anand. How has he inspired you?

My first film of Dev saab which I watched was Yeh Gulistan Hamara and after that I saw Jewel Thief and then I gradually started thinking that yes, I do look like him. So, I stood in front of the mirror and started acting like him and it’s been 50 years now that my name has been attached to his name.

Have you met Dev Anand in person?

When the movie Dil was released, I got noticed. Dev saab called me to his office and complimented me for the role. After that, I met him many times. I met him one month before his death.

How content are you with your career?

I’m satisfied but when the audience makes an image of you, it’s a bit difficult to break. If you do comedy, you get a tag of a comedian and then you get only that kind of roles. I have done theatre too and I can do every kind of role. So, at times, I feel typecast.

You are also into live musical shows. How did that happen?

My elder brother used to sing Mukesh’s songs and he used to perform live. I used to accompany him. Later on, I also started singling live.

Who is your mentor when it comes to acting?

There are many mentors – Sanjeev Kumar, Kay Kay Menon, Boman Irani, Rajpal Yadav, Manoj Bajpayee, Annu Kapoor, Pankaj Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla. These are the actors whom I have adored all my life.
