HIGHLIGHTS

  • KL Rahul made his Test and limited-overs debut under MS Dhoni’s captaincy
  • MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020, plays for CSK in IPL
  • Dhoni became the only captain to complete the tiro of ICC titles — the World Cups and Champions Trophy

India batsman KL Rahul has heaped rich praise on MS Dhoni, saying he learnt the importance of staying humble by watching the World Cup-winning captain carry himself on and off the field. Rahul said Dhoni would not think twice before putting his country ahead of himself.

KL Rahul made his debut under MS Dhoni‘s captaincy. While Rahul got his Test cap during Dhoni’s final series as captain, the young batsman played quite a lot of limited-overs cricket from 2016 to 17 under the former captain’s leadership.

“Something I have learned from him is how humble he has been through ups and downs, how he has put his country ahead of everything is just unbelievable,” Rahul told Forbes.

MS Dhoni is one of the most decorated captains in Indian cricket. Having led the team to the T20 World Cup triumph in the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2007, Dhoni went on to help India end a 28-year-long wait for the 50-over World Cup in 2011. He became the first captain to complete the trio of ICC titles when he led India to a Champions Trophy victory in 2013.

Dhoni is the first name that comes to our mind: Rahul

Dhoni has been regarded as one of the finest readers of the game and his ability to be in the front and pull off miraculous victories from improbable situations remained his trademark. Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020 with his last competitive outing coming at the 2019 World Cup.

Rahul is aware of the laurels that Dhoni has helped bring to the country but the Karnataka batsman said the former skipper’s biggest achievement is the respect he earned from his fellow players.

“Yes, he has won a lot of tournaments, done amazing things for the country but I think the biggest achievement that as captain you can have is the respect of your teammates and any of us would take a bullet for him without a second thought,” he said.

“The minute anybody says captain, the first name that comes to mind from our era will be MS Dhoni. We have all played under him,” he added.

MS Dhoni has moved on from international cricket but he has actively been involved in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni will lead Chennai Super Kings in the remainder of IPL 2021, which is scheduled to be held in September-October in the UAE after having been suspended in India in May due to Covid-19.
