MPPCB & AIIMS ink MoU to study ill-effects of pollutants on humans – ET HealthWorld
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) and AIIMS Bhopal have joined hands to focus on the ill effects of pollutants. On Tuesday, both the institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at AIIMS Bhopal to undertake collaborative research work on the health hazards of environmental pollutants.
According to officials, this is a first where in been MPPCB has joined hands with a medical institute to generate evidence on the long-term impact of environmental factors on human well-being.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, Prof Ajai Singh, promised full support in providing necessary expertise in improving the environmental health. He also spoke about the possibilities of initiating innovative courses on the subject. Member secretary of MPPCB, Chandra Mohan Thakur, welcomed the researchers of AIIMS Bhopal to avail the laboratory facilities on their premises and generate path-breaking evidence that could pave way to forming important policy decisions.
Initially, researchers at AIIMS Bhopal will undertake a field-based pilot study on the potential health implications of airborne fly ash on the population of Singrauli district, which has one of the poorest air quality indices in the country.
The AIIMS has been conducting research and study apart from treatment of various diseases, while MPPCB collects data on air, water and environmental pollution from almost every city of the state. As per the MoU, the board and AIIMS will now conduct joint research to find out what are the ill effects of different types of pollutants on the humans and different types of diseases the pollution leads to.
The MoU, initially, is for two years and depending upon the findings and conclusions, the time frame may be increased, said senior officials of pollution control board and AIIMS present on the occasion.
