“I literally fall in front of thousands of people all the time. Why would I worry about walking through a room in front of a couple of hundred people?” – Ishod Wair

One of the most treasured professional skateboarders joins the podcast! Monster Energy is proud to welcome decorated professional skateboarder and style icon Ishod Wair on Episode 313 of the sports and pop culture podcast UNLEASHED with The Dingo, Danny, and Brittney.
Recorded at Studio M inside Monster Energy headquarters in Corona, California, the one-hour-long episode explores the inspiring journey of the 31-year-old all-round skater (and occasional runway fashion model) from Bordentown, New Jersey, boasting an unparalleled track record of competition wins, awards, and boundary-pushing video parts.
Speaking on what keeps him hooked on skateboarding, Wair said on UNLEASHED: “I don’t have to depend on people and people don’t have to depend on me. I can just roam around with my friends, have adventures every day… It’s just more freedom, that’s what I was drawn to.”

Ishod Wair is your favorite pro skater’s favorite skater. Born and raised in New Jersey, Wair barged into the spotlight on the strength of video parts stacked with never-been-done tricks executed with effortless style. Wair’s rise started when he won the 2011 Kimberley Diamond Cup pro competition as an amateur rider, netting a $100,000 cash prize. From there, things really took off. In 2013, Thrasher Magazine elevated the self-proclaimed skate rat into the rare circle of ‘Skater of the Year’ Award recipients. He made history as the first African American skateboarder to earn that title. Although he’s more at home applying his all-round skate talents at street and transition spots, Wair has racked up quite the portfolio of competition wins: Accolades include an X Games gold medal as well as victories in Street League Skateboarding and Copenhagen Pro Open events – without ever compromising his nonchalant style. Wair discovered skateboarding at age 8, and instantly became hooked. “I wanted a board at 7 but I had to wait until a year later. I got the board for my birthday and that’s how the whole ‘why I’m here’ started,” said Wair on UNLEASHED. Asked why he chose skateboarding over organized team sports, he said: “With skateboarding, you could literally do whatever you want with it.”
Raised in the days before YouTube videos, Wair figured out the intricacies of skateboarding by himself. Once his friends introduced him to skate media, his progression took flight – all the way to a first local shop sponsor and filming his own home-made videos. Word of the gifted all-round skater soon spread to the proprietors of iconic California brand Real Skateboards, who released Wair’s pro model.
The year 2013 became a breakout moment for the rookie pro: In an unparalleled campaign of heavy shredding, he released four video parts and earned Thrasher Magazine’s coveted ‘Skater of the Year’ trophy. Just like that, Wair broke boundaries and opened doors as the first African American skater to win a SOTY trophy.
While many of Wair’s fellow professional skateboarders ‘train’ for contest appearances, the SOTY’s approach is more natural and free flowing. But when he’s on, he’s on. Case in point: Wair owns a gold medal in X Games and won the Copenhagen Open (2017 and 2019) and SLS Unsanctioned 2. Speaking on his approach to competitions, Wair said: “I just don’t think it matters that much to me. I go to contests because I love skateboarding, and I get to see a bunch of people I normally don’t get to see that often. People always do incredible things. And if I end up skating the contest good and win some money, cool.”
When he’s not skateboarding and touring, Wair moonlights as a runway model. All the way to walking in big-ticket shows for influential designer Virgil Abloh (RIP). “I actually never met Virgil personally, I would always talk to him online about skating and this and that. As time has gone on, I have looked up more and more to him. He’s an amazing person and done a lot of amazing things for people.” Asked about the pressures of high fashion, he said: “I literally fall in front of thousands of people all the time. Why would I worry about walking through a room in front of a couple hundred people?”
