Mind Over Money: New age investors are Tamsik investors who invest on hearsay or tip: Arun Thukral

There are a whole lot of meditation techniques, but I would still prefer simple pranayama techniques like anulom vilom and also sitting quietly for a few minutes every morning to do reflection, says Arun Thukral, an independent market expert.

Arun Thukral has over three decades of experience in the BFSI world and has been investing in markets for over two decades. He is the former MD and CEO of Axis Securities.

In an interview with ETMarkets, Thukral said: “If you are an impulsive investor and always believing in action then you are ‘rajasik’ investor, or satvik (calm and taking decisions after looking at various options) or tamsik (investing on hearsay, buying on tips/penny stocks etc).” Edited excerpts:

Any meditation techniques you would like to recommend to our readers?
There are a whole lot of meditation techniques and in today’s world you would even find a lot of meditation apps everywhere.

But, I would still prefer simple pranayama techniques like
anulom vilom and also sitting quietly for a few minutes every morning to do reflection.

In reflection, you would remember the previous day’s events chronologically without being judgmental on those events.

Slowly in your subconscious mind, you would know your own behavior and your basic nature and then improvement starts automatically but you have to experience it to know more.

It looks so simple to perform, but believe me, this is very powerful and effective.

Part 1: Mind Over Money: Arun Thukral decodes how yogic techniques helped him keep his calm during Covid to manage money

Being the author of Yogi on Dalal Street – any yogic principles you would like to recommend?
If you are an impulsive investor and always believing in action then you are ‘
rajasik’ investor, or
satvik (calm and taking decisions after looking at various options) or
tamsik (investing on hearsay, buying on tips/penny stocks etc).

Once you know your profile then accordingly you can adopt a strategy like a
rajasik investor has to learn technicals, importance of stop loss and a
satvik investor will use fundamental principles and
tamsik obviously has to control his behavior and slowly move towards
rajasik/satvik.

Apart from this there are
vrittis which we know as biases in modern terminology which affects your investing behaviour
