Mind Over Money: How meditation and 15,000 steps a day helps this CBO keep mentally fit
In an interview with ETMarkets, Varma, said, “Meditation and self-reflection are essential parts of any leader, and it ensures that one is focused on attaining their goals” Edited excerpts:
You have decades of experience in leadership roles. So how do you manage stress?
In leadership, stress is inevitable; a leader is always conscious of various factors, including performance and ensuring an efficient and effective organization.
There are multiple ways leaders can manage stress, for instance, by taking breaks and delegating. As for me, to be a great leader, I need significant problem-solving abilities; this is much easier for me since I am very passionate about my job.
I look forward to the challenges that the role presents as they make me grow as a leader. I take various measures to ensure that I am prepared.
I often plan, prioritize the tasks, and give enough time for every issue. Hence, stress could be a positive motivator as a healthy amount of pressure helps me to give better output.
A daily step count of 15,000 is big. How do you keep yourself motivated every single day?
I have learned various tricks that help me achieve my target. I am someone who likes to challeng myself both physically and professionally, and I believe that achieving such minor milestones steps me up for completing more significant tasks.
As a person focused on improving myself, I ensure to wake up early in the morning and run at least 10 km; this has become a regular part of my lifestyle.
However, I accept that there are moments when I do not achieve my target due to a tight schedule. In such moments, I compensate by walking for short distances where I do not have to drive.
I have learned to incorporate my workouts into my daily task; for instance, when travelling, I would go to the airport early and do my airport walks.
I also remain active by walking during the coffee and lunch breaks. I enjoy physical activities since they keep me in shape and give me time to reflect.
What meditation do you practice to keep yourself mentally fit?
Meditation and self-reflection are essential parts of any leader, and it ensures that one is focused on attaining their goals.
I like starting the day with what I refer to as ‘my time.’ It is a moment where I listen to devotional music as I do the morning stretching routine.
However, I keep myself focused during weekends and whenever I have time by reflecting on various life aspects.
I could choose a charity activity where I spend time interacting with underprivileged children, motivating them and relating to their perspectives.
Such activities keep me focused on improving the world by touching lives. Music is a significant aspect of my life as it helps me relax and focus.
Whenever I can, especially on Sundays, I prefer going to Gurdwara and spending some time. The ambience and calming atmosphere teach me humility and gratitude.
Does diet play an important role in keeping yourself mentally fit?
Other than meditation and physical fitness, I believe diet is also essential. I have come to acknowledge that people are what they eat.
It is challenging, but I ensure I have a balanced and healthy diet. Proper nutrition is vital for the functioning of the body and mind.
My diet entails organic foods, including vegetables, fresh fruits, proteins, and whole grains. I avoid fast foods; I maintain a strict diet. Also, drinking lots of water is very important; I must always be hydrated.
Apart from diet, what is your mantra for a disciplined lifestyle? What is your daily routine?
My life mantra is hard work and discipline. I discipline myself to adhere to a specific routine for my physical fitness, professional work and wellness.
My day starts at 5:30 am. I wake up at 6 am on the weekends, ensuring I have quality sleep. I do my meditation and go for a run.
I get to the workplace by 8:30 am and study for my research for 2 hours before going to bed. Self-discipline is the key to my success. Strong habits of self-discipline were taught during my early childhood days.
I also believe in thinking positively and staying away from negativity. Weekends are for my family and catching up on reading whatever I missed during the week.
I revisit my notes and check my weekly to-do list, which helps me immensely and prepares me for next week.
