Mind Over Money: How 60-90 mins of badminton help this CEO in strategy formation

“I try to play badminton almost every day, though the work nature and extensive travel does not allow that liberty,” says Abhijit Tare, Managing Director & CEO, Investment Advisors Ltd.

In an interview with ETMarkets, Tare said: “Whenever I am in town and do not have a chock-a-block meeting schedule, I sneak out to catch up with my playing team to have a 60-90 minutes rigorous badminton schedule,” Edited excerpts:

With over 28 years of experience in capital markets how do you keep yourself mentally fit?
Over the period, I have realized two things, this is a Marathon and not a 100-meter sprint race, so one needs to build longevity in professional life, and this is a business of relationships and not of transactions. Transactions are incidental to the relationships that you build over a long period of time.

We heard that you are in love with Badminton. What is the kind of regime you follow on a daily/weekly basis to help manage stress?
I try to play badminton almost every day, though the work nature and extensive travel does not allow that liberty. Whenever I am in town and do not have a chock-a-block meeting schedule, I sneak out to catch up with my playing team to have a 60-90 minutes rigorous badminton schedule. In a week on an average, I play 3-4 times and compensate for the loss of sessions on Sundays.

How did playing Badminton help you in strategy formation?
Every game you play has only two outcomes, either you win, or you lose, but when you start the game, you have to play for the winning cause and strategies from that goal. Understanding the weakness of opponents and complementing the partner is an essential part of the game. You also have to ensure that you peak out your performance at the crucial level in the game and change the narration of the game thereafter.

At the end of every game even if you lose it, learn from the experience and get ready for the next game, that is the attitude you must embrace. There is always a second chance!

Mind Over Money: Badminton not only keeps this CEO fit but also formulate strategy. Here’s how

“I try to play badminton almost every day, though the work nature and extensive travel does not allow that liberty,” says Abhijit Tare, Managing Director & CEO, Motilal Oswal Investment Advisors Ltd.

Apart from Badminton do you also follow a special diet to go along with your exercise regime?
Because of the travel you end up eating a lot of stuff that you may not want to. When in town I would eat only salads for lunch and a very light dinner before 9 pm, but my breakfast is very elaborate. Also, when I don’t play, I do skipping, and push up till I am tired.

Why is mental health more important in current times and especially for the ones who are in leadership roles? Your views.
As I mentioned before this is a marathon and not a sprint, so the longevity of professional life is paramount. For this longevity, one should be able to look at professional life from a certain distance and should not get entangled in the emotional swirl that it brings along with it. It’s extremely important to have a routine unwinding session with oneself to remain in the game for long.
