In the fourth wave of layoffs, Microsoft sacked its entire ethics and society team within the artificial intelligence organisation, which ensured that AI principles were being followed during product design. The move comes at a time when the company is at the forefront of bringing AI tools for mainstream use.
Despite the recent layoffs, Microsoft has an active Office of Responsible AI responsible for creating rules and principles to govern the company’s AI initiatives. Microsoft has stated that its overall investment in responsibility work is increasing.
Despite the recent layoffs, Microsoft has an active Office of Responsible AI responsible for creating rules and principles to govern the company’s AI initiatives. Microsoft has stated that its overall investment in responsibility work is increasing.
Here’s what Microsoft has to say
“Microsoft is committed to developing AI products and experiences safely and responsibly, and does so by investing in people, processes, and partnerships that prioritise this,” the company said in a statement.
The statement further reads, “Over the past six years we have increased the number of people across our product teams and within the Office of Responsible AI who, along with all of us at Microsoft, are accountable for ensuring we put our AI principles into practice. We appreciate the trailblazing work the Ethics & Society did to help us on our ongoing responsible AI journey.”
However, as per the employees, the ethics and society team had a crucial role in ensuring that Microsoft’s responsible AI principles were incorporated into the design of its products before they were released.
Microsoft’s ethics and society team, which had only about seven members after a reorganisation last year, has been eliminated. As per the Platformer, the sources say the company’s leadership, including the CEO, wanted to release the most recent OpenAI models to customers quickly. Members of the team believe they were let go because Microsoft prioritised getting its AI products to market over long-term social responsibility.
