Microsoft brings Windows 11 to M1 and M2 Macs – Times of India
Before Apple transitioned to in-house silicon for Macs, the Macs had support for Windows. But, since the new M-series chip powered Macs, Apple phased out Bootcamp, leaving people with a few workarounds, one of them being Parallels. Now, that workaround has been authorised by Microsoft. So, yes, you can now officially use Parallels to run Windows 11 on M1 and M2 series chips Macs.
Microsoft, on a support page, mentions that Parallels 18 is the “authorised” solution to run Windows 11 on ARM-based Macs. Users can run the ARM-version of Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Enterprise on the Macs powered by the M1 and M2 series chips.
With Parallels Desktop 16.5, the support for Windows on M1 chips was introduced; however, the process was not easy. The latest version of Parallels Desktop now offers a convenient one-click option to download and install Windows 11. In addition, Parallels has simplified the process of meeting Windows 11’s TPM and Secure Boot requirements by incorporating a virtual TPM compatible with Apple silicon.
According to Parallels, companies can buy a Windows 11 licence “using their typical Windows procurement procedure,” while individuals can obtain the Windows 11 Pro licence directly from Microsoft for $199.
Only hardware drivers designed explicitly for Arm-based PCs running Windows 11 will function. Some games that use OpenGL 3.3 or higher or require anti-cheat drivers may not work. Certain apps, such as those that try to integrate with the Windows shell or offer assistive technologies, may not run properly. Furthermore, some third-party antivirus software may not be installable.
Layered virtualization experiences such as Windows Subsystem for Android, Windows Subsystem for Linux, Windows Sandbox, Virtualization-based Security (VBS), and DirectX 12 are not supported. Additionally, 32-bit Arm apps from the Store on Windows are not compatible with Mac powered by M1 and M2 chips.
However, most apps should work correctly thanks to the x64 app emulation now available on Windows on Arm.
There is also another way to run Windows 11 on M1 and M2 Macs, which is through Windows 365 Cloud PCs. Unlike Windows through Parallels, this virtual machine runs the complete Windows 11 in the cloud.
