Meta brings AI face scan-powered age verification to Facebook, here’s how it works – Times of India
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is expanding the AI-based face scan to the platform’s dating service to power its new age verification. The company says this is to ensure age-appropriate experiences for people, and now they will have one more option to choose to verify their age.
From today onwards, the new age verification method will be available to users on Facebook Dating in the US. Facebook’s dating service requires users to be at least 18 years old, and to verify their age, users can use either the AI face scan method or the ID verification. This would help Facebook verify that only adults are using the dating service and prevent minors from accessing it.

Earlier this year, Meta announced its age-detection technology, which helps the company find the discrepancy between the age user provided and how old the user is as per the tool. If the tool detects any user below the age of 18, they will be asked to verify their age using two options – video selfie or ID proof.
Upon selecting the video selfie, the user will be guided throughout the process of recording a selfie. A still image of the video will be shared with Yoti to estimate their actual age, and the same will be shared with Facebook, after which the photo will be deleted, says Meta. The company says that the technology cannot recognize your identity, just your age.
The second method is to upload your ID card, which will be used to confirm the user’s age. Meta says that the ID will be encrypted and stored securely, and it will not be visible on the Facebook profile or to anyone else. Further, the user can decide how long the ID stays stored.
Erica Finkle, Director of Data Governance at Meta, says, “Providing people with more than one option to verify their age allows them to select a method that best fits their needs and preferences. For example, many people don’t always have access to the forms of ID that make verifying age clear.”
Meta first began testing its age verification tool on Instagram back in June.
