Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion faces backlash over AI-generated scenes, here’s what the creators has to say – Times of India
Selim said that using AI for the opening credits aligns with the show’s themes. “When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?” he said, adding that he doesn’t “really understand” how artificial intelligence works, though it piqued his interest.
The process involved discussing concepts, themes, and keywords with the AI, which would then generate content that could be further refined with slight adjustments to the wording.
Viewers on social media are upset by the revelation that AI technology was used to create the opening credits, as it suggests that graphic designers and animators may have been replaced.
The use of AI in the writing process has proven to be a controversial move for the studio, particularly during the current WGA strike. Some social media users support the writers, while others are boycotting the show over the use of AI. One storyboard artist expressed disappointment on Twitter, and another criticised Marvel for using AI in their intro.
What the studio has to say on the use of AI in the tv show
The design division of Method Studios, responsible for the opening, seeks to clarify the reports regarding the use of AI in the animated credits. “AI is just one tool among the array of tool sets our artists used. No artists’ jobs were replaced by incorporating these new tools; instead, they complemented and assisted our creative teams,” the studio told The Hollywood Reporter.
A combination of pre-existing and customised AI tools was used to develop the opening scene. The production process involved the traditional efforts of the art department, animators, compositors, and various other artists, told the studio.
