Luis Rengifo, Mike Trout and Hunter Renfroe power Angels past Blue Jays

The Angels were in need of a big offensive boost after they fell into a four-run deficit by the third inning Saturday night.

It came in the form of monster home runs by Luis Rengifo, Mike Trout and Hunter Renfroe. By the time the smoke from the fireworks and fire blasts from the rocks in Angel Stadium outfield cleared, it was the Angels who held a 9-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

In the fifth inning, Trout blasted a three-run home run, his third of the season, to about the same spot his homer from Saturday landed. His home run allowed the Angels to take their first lead of the game. Renfroe’s two-run shot in the eighth provided some extra insurance for the Angels.

Reliever Carlos Estévez came in to close out the game for the Angels, quickly getting the first two outs on a strikeout and a lineout. He gave up a single and a walk, but then settled to strike out his final batter, securing win No. 5 for the Angels.

Earlier in the fifth inning, Rengifo hit a solo home run, his first of the season. An excited crowd then screamed in jubilation when catcher Matt Thaiss, the next batter after Rengifo, reached first on a throwing error by Toronto starter José Berrios.

Mishaps from the Blue Jays allowed the Angels to create traffic on the basepaths and chip away at the initial deficit. In the third inning Gio Urshela hit a grounder between short and second base that Bo Bichette accidentally kicked into the outfield while trying to scoop up the ball.

The error allowed Urshela to reach third on his single. He was driven in by Rengifo.

The Angels tacked on more runs in the fourth after Anthony Rendon — playing in his first game since his suspension — and Renfroe batted in Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Trout reached after working a walk on Blue Jays’ starter José Berrios and Ohtani doubled down the right-field line.

The Blue Jays struck first this game. In the top of the third, Angels starter Tyler Anderson gave up a pair of two-run home runs, the first to Bichette and the second to third baseman Matt Chapman.

Anderson gave up another home run in the fifth inning, a solo shot to George Springer. Anderson was replaced by Jamie Barría before the end of the inning.

Anderson’s final line over 4⅔ innings included five earned runs on seven hits, four walks and two strike outs.
