Lions Offense Rolls Over Saints in Montgomery Bracket

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lions baseball team (28-24) got its National Tournament underway on Monday with an 11-2 win over Our Lady of the Lake (34-18) in game one of the day, but fell 6-1 in its second game to top-seeded Vanguard (38-14).

Game one was all Lions from the start, and they never looked back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, followed by three runs in the bottom of the third to take a quick 7-1 lead.

Freshman Colton Huntt got the start on the mound, throwing a career-high seven and one-third innings with 109 pitches in the win while striking out three batters.

Will McCall went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI, and Von Watson hit a lead-off home run in the eighth inning.

Watson, Dom Pisano and Dylan Lott each had two RBI’s in the win.

Game two of the day, Vanguard got out to a quick start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Alex Huey settled in on the mound after the first inning, throwing five straight scoreless innings to keep it a two-run contest.

To lead off the top of the sixth inning, McCall hit a long home run over the left-field wall to make it a one-run contest.

Vanguard came back with two runs of their own in the sixth inning, followed by runs in the seventh and eighth to put the game out of reach.

Huey threw six and one-third innings, striking out six batters in the contest.

The Lions will play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in an elimination game against the winner of Our Lady of the Lake and St. Thomas.
