Lindsey Wilson Falls to Midland in Extra Innings

MARION, Ind. – The Lindsey Wilson softball team fell to Midland (Neb.) in extra innings to open play at the NAIA Opening Round – Marion Bracket on Monday afternoon. The Blue Raiders never led in the contest, coming from behind to tie the game in the seventh inning before ultimately falling in the eighth.

Both the Blue Raiders and the Warriors were held in check through five innings as both starting pitchers successfully navigated the opposing offenses. Midland broke through in the sixth inning with three runs on three straight hits to open the frame with the final hit a three-run home run.

Lindsey Wilson responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. Brianna Griffiths reached on a walk to lead things off as Zakiya Sizemore then managed a two-run blast over the right-center field fence, trimming the deficit to one run.

The Warriors added another run in the seventh inning on a solo home run to push their lead to two.

Sizemore leveled the score in the bottom half of the inning with her third and fourth RBIs of the afternoon. Lindsey Wilson was down to their final out of the contest when Sizemore came to the plate.

Alexis Garayzar walked to open the inning as Lexi Isable singled to put runners on the corners. Griffith’s then loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch. Sizemore leveled the score with a single that dropped into right-field over the second baseman’s head.

Midland exploded for four runs on four hits, including their third home run of the contest to open extra innings. Kylie Brown managed the Blue Raiders final run of the game with a solo home run as LWC fell 8-5.

Emily Boin got the start, pitching six innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out six batters. Sadie Werner (11-9) came on in relief to record the loss after allowing five hits and four runs with two strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders were outhit 11-5 for the contest as Sizemore led the way for LWC with two hits across her three plate appearances.

With the loss, Lindsey Wilson falls to the elimination bracket and will face the loser of No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan and No. 4 Olivet Nazarene. The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT tomorrow.
