“We found inordinate delay on part of AMRI-Salt Lake in admitting and transferring this 13-year-old girl who later died at AMRI-Mukundapur. We habe ordered the hospital to pay Rs 9 lakh as compensation,” said WBCERC chairman Ashim Banerjee. The teenager from Barrackpore with history of five days acute fever was first taken to the Salt Lake unit and shifted to the Mukundapur facility the next day.
AMRI officials felt this directive was arbitrary that was passed without considering all the facts at hand and also that the hospital had earlier been penalised on the same case. “The allegations of medical negligence are unfounded and any ruling on it should be issued only after considering every aspect of the case, after hearing all parties concerned. When it comes to a fair hearing, we are ready to cooperate with all relevant documents,” said the hospital source.
The commission chairman said Woodlands Hospital was found violating the commission’s advisory in the context of a specific complaint and asked the hospital to refund Rs 56,000 to the complainant. “We have asked the Woodlands to give us a written undertaking that the hospital will abide by all advisories in future. Otherwise, we will issue penalty directives,” said Banerjee. None from the Alipore hospital was available for comments.
