Kolkata: 4 pvt hosps shut down Covid units permanently, 3 yrs after pandemic – ET HealthWorld
Kolkata: More than three years after the pandemic, at least four private hospitals in Kolkata — AMRI, Medica Superspecialty, Woodlands and RN Tagore — have shut down their Covid units permanently last week. While some are still ready to admit Covid patients in isolation beds that have been earmarked for the purpose, they have done away with isolation units. Two of them will not have isolation beds either.
AMRI Hospitals, that had three-four Covid patients admitted in May-end, has none now. “There will no longer be any Covid ward or beds at our hospitals. In case a patient arrives or tests positive for Covid while under treatment, we will use an isolation bed. We have three of them, one each at Dhakuria, Salt Lake and Mukundapur,” said CEO Rupak Barua. Medica Superspecialty Hospital has converted its Covid unit into a critical care one. “At present we do not have any Covid patient and we have converted our dedicated Covid ward into a critical care ward,” said Ayanabh Deb Gupta, co-founder and joint managing director, Medica Hospitals.
RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) has shut down its Covid unit this month. “We have shut down our Covid unit. However, we still have the isolation area in emergency in case of any urgent requirements,” said Narayana Hospitals regional head, R Venkatesh.
Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital, too, has closed down its Covid ward and reconverted beds that had been kept reserved for Covid positives. “We had no Covid admissions for the last three weeks since the discharge of our last patient on May 24,” said Rupali Basu, managing director and CEO, Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital.
Charnock Hospital is waiting for its lone Covid patient to be released to shut down its Covid beds.
Peerless Hospital, which had a Covid patient till last week, however, has decided to continue with four isolation beds, said CEO Sudipta Mitra. “We will have these beds for some more weeks as the patients undergoing treatment for other diseases might test postitive,” said Mitra.
