They started strongly, scoring 58 runs in the powerplay, but lost three crucial wickets in the process. However, Dhawan took charge and steadied the innings by building a crucial partnership with Jitesh Sharma. His well-crafted innings of 57 off 47 came to an end when he was dismissed by Nitish Rana, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain. The Punjab Kings struggled to build momentum until the last two overs when Shahrukh Khan and Harpreet Brar smashed some big hits to score 36 runs and set a competitive target of 179/7.

In response, KKR got off to a slow start in the powerplay, and as the match progressed, the required run-rate kept increasing. However, Andre Russell’s three sixes in the penultimate over changed the game’s dynamics, and suddenly KKR only needed six runs to win off the last over. Despite a valiant effort from Arshdeep Singh to defend the total, Rinku Singh hit a four off the last ball to take KKR over the line.
