KOLKATA: After 210 minutes of a goal-less battle of attrition spanning across two legs of the ongoing Indian Super League’s second semifinal, ATK Mohun Bagan ended up having the ‘final’ say, beating Hyderabad FC 4-3 in a penalty shootout at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Monday.
Coming into the game following their goalless affair in Hyderabad, both teams failed to produce anything worthy in deciding the tie in regulation and extra time.
However, ATKMB goalkeeper Vishal Kaith saved Javier Siverio’s kick to hand his team an early advantage in the shootout. Hyderabad FC’s ambitions of defending the title withered away further when Bartholomew Ogbeche hit the post.
Although ATKMB’s Brendan Hamill shot it wide, his captain Pritam Kotal was bang on target in the fifth kick to clinch the victory. Juan Ferrando’s ATKMB will take on Bengaluru FC in the final, to be played in Goa on Saturday.
The battle of attrition, which marked the past three meetings between the sides, was in evidence again here, with all its tactical intensity and turgidity.
Playing at home, ATKMB were superior in most departments; they were more proactive and promising, but all their flair and resolve never reached a stage where they could inflict the decisive damage on the reigning champions. Such was Hyderabad’s planning that Bartholomew Ogbeche was often rendered a lone walker in opposition territory.
Manolo Marquez’s side sometimes looked con -tent to accede the midfield to the hosts but was always alert and aggressive in protecting their box.
In the first half which essentially wore the look of a cagey and cautious affair, a few instances stood out like exciting waves in the general flow of the game. In the 22nd minute, Manvir Singh conjured a piece of magic out of nowhere, leaving his marker Hali Charan Narzary gasping for breath with an elegant turn before unleash -ing a scorching left-footer from the edge of the box.
The shot beat a flying Gurmeet Singh all ends up but the crossbar came in the way between the ATKMB striker and the glory. Four minutes later, Mohammed Yasir, snatching the ball from Asish Rai, threaded a brilliant pass across the field to find an overlapping Narzary but the latter was way of the target.
