The procedure, which lasted for 31 minutes, is the first of its kind carried out at AIIMS for kidney, after some very complex robotic surgeries for many other diseases.
Associate Professor at the Urology department, Gautam Choudhary, said that a 45-year old patient had come to the hospital with acidity like pain. But after ultrasound, he was found to have bilateral multiple renal tumours, i. e. multiple tumours in both the kidneys.
“So we first decided to remove the 9 tumours from one kidney, comprising 8 cystic tumours and one solid tumour,” he said.
“We had earlier done nephrectomy through open surgery but considering the complexity due to multiple tumours in multiple organs here, we used Robotic surgery as it gives advantage of better vision, better control and freedom of movement inside the body during surgery,” he said.
He further added that there was a compulsion to complete the surgery in 30 minutes as the blood supply to the kidney, which had to be shut during surgery, could not be extended beyond this time period.
“We are happy that we could successfully finish the procedure in 31 minutes,” he said, adding that the patient was discharged after 3 days observation.
HoD (Urology) A S Sandhu, who headed the team of doctors, said that 60-70% patients with small kidney tumours have no symptoms and could be found only after the patient imaging for the unrelated symptoms, as in this case.
He said that the same procedure for multiple tumours will be carried out for the second kidney of this patient two months later after his first kidney fully recovered.
