JioCinema to charge for content
As reported by Bloomberg, JioCinema is planning to add more than 100 films and TV series to the streaming platform. This means that JioCineman will soon start charging the users for the content. JioCinema’s media and content business president Jyoti Deshpande told Bloomberg in an interview that the company is working on adding new titles before the end of IPL 2023 on the platform. The plan encompasses the launch of a variety of films and series in genres ranging from thrillers and romance to biopics, all of which will be available in languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and Gujarati. Additionally, Jio Studios will unveil several new and original movies, including Dunki starring Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan and Section 84 featuring veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan.
The conglomerate-owned platform is expected to implement a strategy of charging for content, coinciding with its current influx of viewers who are tuning in for the ongoing excitement of the IPL.
According to JioCinema, the platform recorded 5.5 billion unique video views in the first week, and the Chennai Super Kings versus Rajasthan Royals match on April 12, 2023, attracted a staggering 22 million concurrent viewers, setting a new record.
The remarkable statistics of the IPL have extended to television viewership as well. Disney Star, which is broadcasting the matches on over 20 channels, reported that the first 10 IPL games accumulated 62.3 billion minutes of watch time, with a peak concurrency of 56 million during the opening match.
